One of the biggest keys to microgreen growing success is getting your seed density just right.
In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the optimum amount of seeds to sprinkle onto your growmats for healthy, even growth — no waste, no overcrowding, and no guesswork.
Here’s how to strike the perfect balance for strong, healthy microgreens every time.
Why Seed Density Matters
The amount of seed you use directly affects:
-
Germination success
-
Airflow and mould risk
-
Light exposure
-
Nutrient availability
-
Final yield and harvest quality
Too few seeds = sparse, weak growth.
Too many = overcrowded, leggy greens that compete for light, water, and oxygen — and are prone to mould.
As a general guide:
- Use 2 to 3.5 grams of seed per growmat, depending on the variety.
- Small seeds should be nearly touching but not overlapping, Medium to large seeds should be 2-4mm between seeds
- Our seed sachets (in our sampler set) are pre-measured for your convenience & our seedmats take all the guesswork out by perfectly spacing over 440 seeds for you.

Tips for Sowing your Growmats
✅ Soak the mat first – A saturated mat helps seeds stick (and not bounce off when sprinkling). It also helps the seeds to start absorbing moisture.
✅ Spread seeds evenly – After sprinkling, you can use your fingertips or a small spoon for a nice, even spread.
✅ Don’t overlap seeds – Overlapping leads to weak roots and rot.
