We’re on hunt for enthusiastic and bright summer student to join our team here at micropod! We’ve got some very exciting (and challenging!) R&D projects lined up for the next 3 years. We’re looking for someone studying Plant Science/ Horticulture/ Agritech to help with the first phase of our R&D project for the next 2-4 months. For the right candidate, this could lead to a permanent position as we scale and expand internationally.
Micropod is a small NZ owned and grown business established in 2019. Our mission is to make indoor gardening simple, accessible and rewarding for everyone. Our award-winning product is a unique hydroponic kit which makes growing microgreens at home as easy as just adding water. Our product design and core values centre on sustainability and doing as much as we can to contributing towards a cleaner and greener future.
About your role as micropod’s first summer student
The micropod system and IP strategy is centered around our proprietary seed mats. Currently, we only sell a handful of seed mat varieties (of the dozens of seed varieties available). Each seed has their unique challenges and scientific unknowns and each micropod seed mat is optimised for the seed type, making developing new varieties challenging.
This phase of the R&D project is focused on; substantially improving our seed mats, developing new and existing varieties to deliver the best customer experience, and staying ahead of our competition.
You will be working on:
- Technical feasibility and assisting in design, setup and the commissioning of a specialised growing test chamber for microgreens (the first of its kind in the world). This is already underway and expected to be complete at the end of Nov 2020.
- Creating new seed mats for larger and obscure shaped seeds
- Setting up and accurately tracking and measuring grow tests using our new test chamber and camera-based system
This is a collaborative project between Micropod, Blender Design and Plant and Food Research, so you’ll be gaining experience working some of the industry’s best!
You will be based in Mt Wellington, Auckland. You may also be required to work at our partner sites from time to time (Northshore, Auckland and Palmerston North)
Start date: Dec 2020 – Feb/Mar 2021
Hours required: 30-40h/week
So, If you’re the type of self-motivated person, bursting with great ideas, ready for a challenge, and eager to make an impact, then we want to hear from you!
